I originally intended to have this blog be entirely about my experience as an unexpected mother, but I’ve decided to expand it’s emphasis to include anything and everything I feel the need to write about.
You see, I’ve got these voices in my head. And I feel that one way to stop their incessant chatter is to express their thoughts on the interwebs, where they might be viewed by others and accepted and applauded and/or laughed at and shown just how silly they really are. So this is kinda like a spiritual experiment. And speaking of voices in the head….
Lotsa people have a belief in god. Which is fine, I guess. But what is really making me angry lately, is people who think they’ve got a monopoly on god’s inner thoughts. I’m sick of people who think they’ve got god on their side and that they know what god wants, who are killing people, killing more people, threatening America, starting wars, denying rights of others, and just generally being rude and obnoxious. Seriously what the fuck?
I broke up with Jesus in 2000. I realized that I had a higher, internal moral code than was offered in the Christian Bible. Since then, my feelings on religion have ranged from tolerance to disgust, depending on the day. Now I know what everyone is going to say… religious people do good stuff too. And that’s super. But just as frequently, if not more frequently religion and ideology are used as a reason to kill, hurt and persecute people. And it’s bullshit and I’m sick of it.
In America, religious intolerance is usually less violent, but ludicrous nonetheless, because we are called ‘the land of the free.’
Why is it that people feel they can pick and choose some values from The Bible to champion, and not others?
Stop telling me it is a sin to be a homosexual, if you don’t even know where in the bible it says so.
Stop quoting supposedly anti-gay bible passages, if you haven’t thought for five minutes about where the bible came from and whether or not its “words of god” might have been just slightly modified by humans over thousands of years of translation through a proverbial game of “telephone.”
Stop using Christianity as an excuse to judge other people when your “savior” specifically decries doing so.
And for crying out loud, stop thinking you have a right say who should and shouldn’t get married because of your fucking religious beliefs!
We don’t live in the United States of Christianity.
In fact, not even all Christians agree about homosexuality. If you are a Christian and you believe that gays should not be allowed to get married, am I remiss in calling you arrogant and ignorant? I mean, you believe that you have a monopoly on the knowledge of what god thinks is right, right? Even though lots of people disagree with you, you think you’re right. And you think that it is up to you carry out god’s moral guidelines by preventing other individuals from sharing the same rights which you yourself enjoy!
Do you take as seriously the rest of the bible as those passages you use to condemn gays and gay marriage?
Where is your proof that the Bible is actually the word of ‘God’?
Where is your proof that your interpretation of the Bible is the right one? Why should we listen to you? Do you even know why you believe in this particular God or this particular Holy Book? What if YOU’RE wrong?
Now I’m not one to tell someone what they should or shouldn’t believe. If people say their religion helps them, who am I to deny that?
But those who are religious should stop using their religion as an excuse to persecute and deny equal rights to homosexuals and transgenders.
Keith Olberman says it much more eloquently than I ever could…
